LSS2113 Intercultural studies - 12 Dimensions Critical Reflection

Part 1:

In this reflection I will talk about 5 dimensions Outlook, Expression, Planning, Communication and status, first of all I will describe each dimension and what I think it means.

In Outlook people measure their achievement base on traditions (focusing on past achievements) or invocations (measure success base on plans and ideas).
In Expressions it’s whether people reveal or conceal their expressions and emotions while dealing with other peoples.
In Planning if people set their schedule and plan base on time or people/event.
In Communications if people communicate openly and directly or indirectly through other people.
In Status if people’s status was achieved through hard work and personal success or it was ascribed from their family name or the class that they are part of.

Part2:

2.1

Based on my CMI results, compared to my group, I can make the following analysis of 5 of my dimensions / polarities.

From my CMI report it shows that I have more innovation outlook than tradition which means that I base my success on future potential rather than past experience, and that will help me in my work because I will be always focusing on plans and ideas and not only cling on past achievement. Most of my group are innovation oriented so I will fit right with them because we will be in sync with each other’s, but some still have tradition perspective in dealing with them I have to use there knowledge and learn from the past and take them in confederation while changing to the future.
In Expression I have the tendency to be conceal about expressing my emotions, but some time if I believed that it is necessary to express my feeling in controlled way I will. Most of group are conceal we will fit right with each other, in handling revealing people I will Try to adjust my style to avoid appearing too distant and detached.

In planning I have a tendency of being more Time Oriented, it is important to schedule base on time with keeping in mind that sometimes it is important to put important people first. In my group people are ranging from time to people oriented, and it will be a little challenging to me to deal people oriented planners, so I need to set realistic deadlines in work environment and accept that there will be times people will miss appointments.

In communication I am a Direct Oriented, I will speak my mind directly and intentionally, my group I ranging from direct to almost indirect, in my case Indirect-oriented people might sometimes feel offended by this approach, when dealing with them I have to be more tactful than usual and be mindful of how I say things.

In status I have a tendency towards being Achieve Oriented, I appreciate rewards being attached to project, task and service related achievements, I can appreciate people ascribing positions on the basis of educations, years of service or family-descend in the company but I will not incorporated in my managing style.

2.2

The report said that I was very innovation oriented which I agree with because I think innovation is the future and this is what we use to achieve it.

The report said that I was very conceal and I agree with as I like to say something when it seems right to say so.

The report said that I was very time planner which I agree because I like to play my day base on time not people.

The report said that I was very direct in communication, however how I can be conceal and direct at the same time I think am between the both.

The report said that I was very status achieved which I agree because I like to earn what I get from working and every aspect of life.

Part3:

Yes I this my results will be different because as human beings we develops and gain/ lose some of our quality’s, and I like it to be different as example in my communication I am direct and I like to accommodate both polarities. I think in work or life it is a good thing to in the meddle I mean to have the quality of both polarities so I can deal all kind of people and can handle different kind of situations.

Exercise #5

Cultural Dimension
Character
Todd, Puro, Aisha or other
Outsourced Scene
or Circumstance
Communication- direct/indirect
Todd and the manager manger
The manager used direct communication with Todd pressure him to go to India.
Expression – Reveal / conceal
Todd and his manger
Reveal expression. Todd started revealing his opinion by refusing to move to India and did not obey to the manager’s order at first
Context – Informal / formal
Todd and his manger
Informal. Which actually indicate that Todd is  in close relationship with his manager
Connecting—Exclusive / inclusive
Aunti Ji and Todd
Aunti Ji was very inclusive in connection with Todd. He was included once he arrived at Aunti Ji home.

3. When he gets on the train, he cannot find an empty seat. How is this problem solved for him? How might this be a cultural solution?
One of the kids among the travelers offers him his seat and the kid sit on Todd’s lap which was unexpected to Todd. What I see from the kid’s action is that a part of their culture is that younger people should always respect older people. Because if the kids sit in elder laps it will create space for more passenger.
4. As any exchange student, he has a lot of experiences trying new food. His first encounter is with an iced drink. What happens?
Todd bought a cup of Gola (iced drink) to quench his thirst, but later on he gets stomachache because his not used to the drink, just like milk camel when Bedouins in UAE offer camel milk to people not used to it,  it cause them diarrhea.
7. Todd wants to check in to a hotel. But Puro insists he comes to a boarding house. What is the reason he gives Todd?
Because Garabori Palace hotel is lonely and Puro does not want Todd to feel lonely but wants him to be in good hands.

8. As soon as they meet, Aunti Ji starts asking very intimate questions that Americans who have just met would never ask. What kind of things does she ask?
1.     Are you married?
2.     Do you have girl friend?
3.     Why they broke up?

These questions are personal.

Exercise #4

Amish

Due to their strong religion beliefs Amish people have a strict life style with little freedom. They live in a very open community in Pennsylvania America. Because of their strict life Amish don’t use cars or any other technology they rely on horses and on simpler life style. Because of that they have closed community which makes them an Exclusive Connects.

When it comes to dealing with other surrounding communities Amish people are concealing community. I believe that one of the reasons that make the Amish people continued till this day their accountability. They tend to be accountable to their group or tribe. Their decision and choices should be compatible with their religion teachings and structures.

Exercise #2

The Conflict is on Xinjiang region in People's Republic of China. And the involved parties are the Muslim Chinese who lives in the region and Chinese government. The conflict is mainly focusing on not allowing Muslim people from fasting at Ramadan which is one of the main aspects of their religion. And since this is part of the Islamic religion ritual it became a sensitive situation for them, especially that the government reason’s and justification was weak and not logical.

We think the cultural view on these conflicts is all about power and fear since the government uses its power to ban Muslims from fasting during Ramadan claiming that it will effect on employees health and their capability, without taking in consideration the Sacredness of the subject for the Muslims.

In our opinion the best solution to this problem is allowing Muslim’s to carry out and perform their Religious behaviors without any interruption, especially they didn't cause any harm of any kind to other local’s what so ever.

Exercise #1

Engaging with the locals and understand their culture is the experience that I need to go through, but I don't have to agree or experience the things that I don't agree with like "Bullfighting". And for me as a traveler I can't change what was there all of their lives and what somehow is related to tradition or religion.
